The telecom war between Airtel and Reliance Jio seems not to be ending soon.
Airtel appealed before Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) against TRAI(Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) for allowing Jio to continue offering free services to it’s subscribers even after the stipulated period of 90 days ended on 3 December( as calculated from 4 September Reliance Jio launch).
This move from Airtel comes after Jio’s plan to extend the “Welcome Offer” for it’s subscribers which was supposed to end on 31st December. Jio has promised to switch existing subscribers to “Happy New Year Offer” allowing them to enjoy free services from Reliance Jio till 31st March. Moreover, new subscribers are also eligible to avail the offer.
Airtel claims that TRAI has turned a blind eye towards Jio and has been acting as a mute spectator as Mukesh Ambani keeps offering predatory prices and schemes creating undue competition and pressure for Airtel to follow suit. Airtel, the current leader in Indian Telecom industry launched some amazing plans for both Postpaid and Prepaid subscribers a few days ago to maintain it’s leading position.
The 25-page petition submitted by Airtel seeks TDSAT’s attention towards the unfair and skewed traffic it receives from free Jio subscribers causing constraints on its networks and significant day-to-day losses.
TDSAT directed TRAI to come back with its final decision on 24 December. It also directed the Jio counsel to file an impleadment application. The next hearing will take place on 6th January in 2017.
