Have you always wanted to be able to customize your phone? Make it suit your taste? Your style? Your personality? The new Moto Mods you can do it all and a lot more.
If you know about Google’s Project Ara, then Motorola’s Moto Z Moto Mods is a bold step towards the future of mobile technology.
Motorola has always been about innovation and has been the pioneer in the telecom and phone industry. Even after being sold to Google and later to Lenovo, Motorola has been able to face the tides unlike Nokia, Blackberry and other prominent companies of their time.
With the introduction of Moto Mods, Motorola is trying to start a completely new revolution, chasing a futuristic vision to bring back the glory and pride it once held.
The Modular Phone technology is based on the idea to give every new phone buyer the power to choose the specifications of their phone themselves. You like a phone with the best camera.. done. You can manage with a decent camera but want surround sound speakers… wish granted. You want both you can do that too. That’s what modular phone technology is about.. building your own device, the way you like it.
Motorola’s Moto Z based Moto Mods is an impressive first step in the long term realisation of completely modular phones where you can tweak even the core hardware of your phone. A future where your phone will never be outdated and you will never need to buy a new phone, until ofcourse you lose it or break it.
The basic concept is that you buy a base phone with some standard features with inbuilt mechanism(magnets+electronics) to attach modules, in this case Moto Mods(Yes, buy them additionally) and viola you have your own customized phone.
This is not a completely new approach. It may be somewhat unheard of among the Android-phone community, but customizing your phone with addons is not a novelty for iPhone users who have many options like addon camera lenses(compatible with many Android-phones also). The only uncommon thing here is that the phone is actually built(some strong magnets) and marketed as a modular phone.
Mind you that, as soon as I tell you the price tags associated you will loose all enthusiasm built up above.
The base phone comes in two varients, Moto Z and Moto Z Play with option to choose from 5+ addons known as Moto Mods.
Moto Z retails for $624-720 in the US(Rs. 39,999 in India) while the cheaper varient Moto Z Play retails for $ 408-449.99(Rs 24,999 in India).
The real cost is not the Moto Z or the Moto Z Play, but the Moto Mods. One can make up one’s mind to invest in the base phone once(even though at this price point, far better phones are available) but what about the addons? Would you be willing to spend so much on a fancy camera($299.99/Rs.19,999) or speaker($79.99/Rs.6,999) addon?
An even greater concern is cross-compatibility with other module and smartphone manufacturers. Even compatibility with Motorola’s own devices is difficult if phone sizes vary. Moto Mods will go only so far if Motorola puts constraints on the usage of Moto Mods with other devices or vice versa.
Is the price justified? Is there actually a future for modular phones? Are you even interested in the concept? Please share your opinions in the comments section below.
