I want this, no I want that, but wait that feature will come in handy later on a vacation maybe. Ahh! These are some of the thoughts which come to our mind when we want something which comes in a variety of specs and design, and especially smartphones.
Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects group (ATAP) has finally come up with a solution to end this problem, PROJECT ARA. It’s the code name of the upcoming modular phone from google. Yes, you heard it right! Modular. Google has succeeded in creating a Lego-like smartphone in which you can mix, match and swap the components you like. It consist of six flexible slots which can be used for swapping out components, whatever it may be — Camera, memory, display panels, RAM, Secondary Battery, keyboard, sensors, and maybe even projectors ,and much more. It’s body frame consist of highly durable, universal latches and connectors to slide in any ARA module.
On Day 3 at Google I/O 2016, the crowd was stunned as a simple “Okay Google, eject camera module” was all it took to have the camera module pop off the back of the Project Ara frame. Last year at I/o, we witnessed how fast and easy it was to assemble the modules in and out the ARA frame. Well as they say, it only takes a sparkle to start a fire, it only takes a unique idea to start a new technology revolution. We have already witnessed a somewhat modular design in LG G5 with it’s unique set of accessories labelled under the tag “friends“. These friends consist of camera modules for photography and speakers for playing music.
Unlike Nexus, ARA will be manufactured and designed by google solely as the sources confirmed. To the bitter part, that may mean a bit higher price tag to the upcoming flagship in the market. As the source suggests, the company is all set to launch the device commercially next year and will start rolling out Developer Edition this autumn so that other third-party manufacturers can start building and testing their own modules.
Let us hope for best and wait to see how the gimmick rise in this huge competitive market of smartphones.
